WSC Offering Youth Basic Rifle Marksmanship Course – by Chris Mayer, Board member & RSO

Attention all WSC Parents and Grandparents! Your WSC will be conducting a Basic Rifle marksmanship program for children 9 to 17 years old. The program will utilize .22RF rifles and the WSC will supply the ammunition. If the youth does not have a rifle the WSC will supply one. There is no cost for the course however donations for the cost of targets and ammunition will be accepted. The WSC trainers are certified instructors and the WSC will have sufficient RSOs present to ensure range safety. The parent / guardian is responsible for their transportation to and from the range.

All participating youths, after their successful completion of the Basic Marksmanship Course, will be awarded a FREE “WSC Youth Membership” which will permit them full access to the WSC Range to maintain and improve their new shooting sports skills until they turn 18. At that time they would need to change their membership to an adult status.

What you need to do and why. The WSC needs to know NOW how many youths would be interested in attending. The time frame will be Saturdays in the late spring / summer. Email the club with your name & number, the youth(s)’ name(s), ages, and if they have a rifle to use or not. Or if you just want further info do the same wscazrange01@gmail.com

Range Gate Locked? – by Martin Martin, President & RSO

If the range gate is locked during scheduled hours the range is closed. Remember we share the range with other users and sometimes we may close early or even for the entire day due to weather. Also the USFS permit requires us to close the range access road if it is excessively muddy to prevent deep ruts and surface damage. We attempt to notify all WSC members about range closures and apologize for any inconvenience. Thank you for understanding. As always – Check the WSC website before traveling.

Protecting Your Freedom – by Martin Martin, President & RSO

If you are interested about your Right to Keep and Bear Arms in Arizona then you may want to consider the Arizona Citizens Defense League (AzCDL). This organization is an all-volunteer, non-profit, non-partisan grassroots effort that believes the emphasis of gun laws should be on 3 criminal misuse and that law-abiding citizens should be able to own and carry firearms unaffected by unnecessary laws or regulations. Rifle & Pistol Range Activities – by Bill Cannon, RSO

Practical Pistol Challenge Saturday April 13th 9 AM – 1 PM – The second Saturday monthly We know you’ve heard it before “But wait! There’s more! It’s designed for You – Come out!”

As an alternative to shooting at fixed targets and to advance WSC members’ skill sets, the WSC is offering a Practical Pistol Challenge as an additional and fun shooting opportunity. As the title implies, the course of fire is designed to impart ‘practical’ or a somewhat limited ‘real life defensive use’ of a pistol or pistol caliber carbine. The WSC Board is enthusiastic about the value this course offers our members and to ensure consistency of operations Bill Cannon has been designated as the Lead RSO to manage these monthly shoots.

It is designed to provide all WSC members an enjoyable time sharpening their shooting skills. The course is designed to be a fun, learning experience for those who carry a defensive pistol or you guys and gals new to pistol shooting – so don’t panic as there is no set course of fire that you must follow. This means you may ask and engage all or only certain challenges.

There may be challenges with scenarios consisting of differing targets and target types, reloading demands, movement challenges, timed fire if you want, moving targets, barricade positions, and the opportunity to utilize differing standing, kneeling and prone shooting positions. Members may shoot the course as many times as they desire but if multiple of members are in attendance we will use a rotational order. Bring a box of ammo and a spare
magazine or two. If you happen to go to the range when the course is being conducted please go over and check it out. You’ll see it is set up to be FUN.

The WSC intends to offer this opportunity ever month and with more frequency as demand justifies. Right now the course will be offered the second Saturday monthly and shall be posted on the website, in the newsletter, and at the Range.

Mark your calendars for Saturday April 13th – RSOs Bill Cannon and Dale Vicari will help you.

Quotable Quote – From the pages of the Williams Grand Canyon News October 2, 2021

“Our youth are the future of shooting sports activities in this country. Some might take up hunting, some may find competitive shooting their passion, but all of them started here learning safe firearms practices and being introduced to the proper fundamentals of the shooting sports.”

-WSC Past President Keith Heimes
