Announcements

Important Safety ReminderYour Responsibilities on the Range

The WSC mandates that its members utilize safe gun handling practices.  Conversely it is the sole responsibility of every WSC member – YOU – and all range users that to ensure they have a properly maintained, functional, and safe firearm.  Everyone is expected to know how to operate the firearm properly and per the specific firearm’s owner’s operating manual.  Everyone must ensure they have the proper caliber and type of ammunition specific to that firearm.  The use of reloaded ammunition is permitted however it is again your sole responsibility that the ammunition has been assembled correctly or if purchased that it is from a responsible party.  If your firearm has a known or suspected issue you must deal with it – take it to a qualified gunsmith and get it sorted out or resolved.  Still in doubt – leave it home!

This is important as firearms, ammunition, and firearm accessories are occasionaly the subject of a safety notice, voluntary upgrade program, or product recall.  You, as a firearm owner, are directly responsible for your firearm, the ammunition to be fired, and the accessories to be utilized.  Total responsibility includes knowing your firearm, reading the manual, and understanding its functioning.  And your responsibility continues to when you are on the Range.  Practice safety & follow the directives of our Range Safety Officers.  SAFETY IS NO ACCIDENT.

Changes to our Range operations to further enhance safety are coming.  Look for new signage greeting you as you reach the range parking area such as –

  1. No Loaded Firearms past this point including Concealed Carry.
  2. Check in with the RSO at Registration prior to bringing Firearms to the bench.
  3. Eye and Ear Protection required.

Concealed carry of loaded firearms on the range is only authorized for on duty RSOs.  RSOs will have additional instructions regarding range usage and bringing firearms to the range, which actions will be permitted during a “HOT” range, that firearm shall remain cased until benched, staying behind the yellow line during a “COLD” range, etc.

We realize this may be a concern to some members, but due to our growing membership and increasing range attendance, combined with the differing experience levels of shooters and the challenges presented our RSOs by the various types of firearms and ammunition – which is outside of the purview of the WSC to regulate – your WSC finds it necessary to adopt these enhanced safety requirements.  And as time progresses we may need to further modify some of our range proceedures.  We hope you all understand and appreciate your cooperation.

Last Wednesday of the Month .22 Shoot – Next Shoot Wed June 25th

This shoot will be ‘Golf Balls.’  The first shooter to get a golf ball across the finish line wins.  Other Golf Ball challenges will be tried too.  Any .22 will do, iron sights or optics OK.  Hope to see you all out there again!  Fore!  You will not need a caddy!

Sat July 5th next Monthly NRA Pistol Marksmanship Qualifications

Your WSC is hosting the NRA Marksmanship Qualification Program (MQP) for Pistol marksmanship the first Saturday monthly from July 5th to September 6th from 9 AM – 1 PM.  The NRA Marksmanship Qualification Program is a skill development program and has been the flagship of NRA’s training development programs since 1903.

This year we will be working on Pistol Marksmanship.  As some participants advance we can also work on the Defensive Pistol 1 drills.  Full Details on the pistol drills being conducted are available on the NRA MQP website: https://mqp.nra.org/

Targets will be provided by the club for those who do qualify.  There is no limit to the amount of tries, but you do have to follow the drill according to the NRA guide.

Pistol Marksmanship: https://mqp.nra.org/media/8333/mqp-guide-book.pdf#page=6

Semi-automatics and Revolvers can both be used, and all calibers (including 22lr) and all sights and optics are welcome.  Youth and Family are invited to participate.

The full Pistol Marksmanship course from Pro-Marksman to Distinguished Expert requires 470 rounds.  You do not have to qualify for every stage in a single day, but you do have to qualify in the order outlined (Pro-marksman to start, then to Marksman, and so forth…)  Pro-Marksman: 70 rounds, Marksman: 80 rounds, Sharpshooter: 100 rounds, Expert: 100 rounds, Distinguished Expert: 120 rounds

If you have any questions or need more details please reach out to the range at wscazrange01@gmail.com   Please include NRA MQP in the subject line.

Held the first Sunday monthly 1 PM – 5 PM.  Last shoot will be September 7th

Sat July 12th next Steel Challenge Shoot – Fun Stuff!

This fun shooting course is open to pistols and pistol caliber carbines, and now regular carbines are permitted but limited to .223, 6mm ARC, .30 carbine and such.  No 7.62X39mm, .300 Blackout, .30-30, etc. permitted as the targets can’t handle those larger bullet weights and velocities.  Think of this as the adult version of a kids carnival gallery shoot.  What’s not to like?

Range Safety Officers – Monthly Range Duty Assignment Scheduling

A the recent board meeting the process of range duty voluntary signups was reviewed.  It has become a common occurance that one or two days linger for a week or two before an RSO will step up and take it.  And this after sometimes repeated shout outs by the CRSO to get someone.  And sometimes that ‘someone’ is an RSO that has already signed up for a day that month and now, to help out, they are now  pulling ‘double duty’ so to speak.  The Board and CSRO are thankful for the ones who have stepped up to take two days when theses difficulties present themselves.  We also unstand that some folks work, some folks can’t do Sundays, some times ‘life’ gets in the way, and sometimes the only days you were available for range duty somebody else beat you to it.  I hate that when that happens!

So what’s an RSO to do?   If any RSO, due to their own tight schedule, can only do one specific day, please contact either Wynn Simon or Jeff Reese prior to the monthly RSO sign up email going out (which usually the night of or the day after the board meeting).  They’ll work to get you assigned for that day, if available, but please understand this is not to be the rule, but the exception – we do not want to have RSO’s constantly Pre Signing up.

And for those RSOs who can only make a certain day but find that it is filled up you certainly can just show up on that day, or as a matter of fact, any range day and put in your time.  Make sure you sign the RSO Sign in Sheet which ensures you get the duty credit.  In addition, there are many days we need more than one RSO covering the range due to the ratio of RSO vs members.  So heck, if you haven’t signed up for a day next month as all the slots were taken, feel free to just come and help out a fellow RSO.  I know they will appreciate that as I’m sure you would!

Some more important items for you –

  • All all RSOs Save the Date! – Appreciation BBQ event set for Sat Aug 16th.  More info TBA.
  • Greetings and welcome back to our summer RSO’s who play a big role in ensuring the range is open and run safely!
  • Where’s the Beef?  The range cattle are back so the Range entry gate must be kept closed.
  • Please make sure wooden blocks are in the FRONT of the Target Stands to protect them from bullet penetration/damage.
  • Only tape is allowed in the Target cabinet.  The Stapler is only for RSO use to attach cardboard to the wood uprights.  Keep the stapler in the RSO box.
  • If you have free time, please inspect the target frames in the cabinet and repair or replace as needed.
  • If people want to “pattern” their shotguns, encourage them to go to the WSC Sporting Clays range at Raymond Boy Scout camp when it is open for business.  Shotguns totally destroy our standard target wood uprights and cardbord.
