President’s Message – Martin Martin, President & RSO

Tis the Season

‘Tis that time of year for giving.’  This means the year 2025 will be sealed in history soon and most certainly evoke unique memories for us all.   There will still be 365 days in the New Year for each of us—and how we choose to use our allotted time is important.

And while on the topic of time permit me to tell you about a loyal segment of WSC members who always seem to find time to “get ‘er done” where the day-to-day operations of the WSC Range is concerned.  These folks are your Range Safety Officers whom the general membership sees every time they visit the Range.  These same folks wear several hats—from “supply sergeant” as they scrounge for building supplies, to general contractors as they assemble those same building supplies into useful Range improvements.  All WSC Range improvements, while accomplished at a minimal expense of $$$ to the Club, the tradeoff is the significant outlay of time by our volunteers.  So, as you make your 2026 resolutions think about including the WSC and its needs in your plan as you allocate your time for the upcoming year— as the Club always needs a few good volunteers.

Merry Christmas to all,

Martin

Range now in Winter Schedule of 10 AM – 2 PM

Since December 1st the Range has been operating under our WINTER schedule of 10 AM – 2 PM – a shift of one hour later in the day to get us more into the warm sunshine.  Just because the Grand Canyon Railroad has a Polar Express doesn’t mean we need to follow suit!  The Range will be open every Wednesday, Saturday, and Sunday, weather permitting.

Ladies Pistol Instruction Oct 2025

Fourteen ladies participated and this effort will be repeated in the spring of 2026.  The following RSOs assisted –

Wynn Simon

Glen Mayernick

Kirk Copper

Tim Topell

Tim Murphy

Jeff Reese

Kelly & Vicki Spencer

Chief Range Safety Officer Wynn Simon expressed his thanks to all the RSOs who made this training session a success.  And all the ladies passed the shooting qualifications!  The RSOs truly appreciated the praise and gratitutde shown by them.

Everyone looks happy and the weather was perfect!  The WSC plans more Ladies’ pistol instruction classes starting in the spring of 2026.

Range Safety Officers – We’re Busy at Both  Ranges!

  • See something that needs fixing?  In the RSO white binder there is a section devoted to “Range Maintenance” write ups.  Just make note of what needs fixing and the range crew will take it from there.
  • Warren always needs help with Sporting Clays so if you volunteer to assist this qualifies as Range Duty fulfillment.  If able call him at (909) 816-1144 or warrenweir6@gmail.com
  • We now have a bullhorn in the RSO Range box available for use if the Range is crowded and you need help being heard.  Remember to switch it OFF after use to save the batteries.

Please Join our WSC FaceBook group!

It’s a great way for us – the WSC – to put out our news about the range and all our upcoming fun events and happenings!  We have just a few followers so we need everyone’s help.

December Board Meeting

WSC Board and General Meetings are held the second Wednesday afternoon of every month starting at 4 PM at the American Legion Hall, 425 West Grant Ave.  All WSC members and the public are welcome to attend.  Our next WSC Board meeting is set for Wednesday January 14th at 4 PM.  For full details please read the minutes which can be found on the WSC website.

Sporting Clays

The next shoot will be Sunday January 25th.   Two different start times are available – 10 AM for Round 1, and 1 PM for Round 2.  If you would like to shoot one or both, please respond to reserve your spot or spots. As always we will have a cut off of 12 shooters per Round.  If you have any questions or concerns, please call, text or email Warren directly.  The WSC also has Remington 870 pump shotguns in both 12 and 20 ga available for use.

Fun in the Sun – Your fellow WSC Members pitching in to Help

Early November saw 10 WSC members volunteer to do some Range maintenance work.  The specific task was to build target stand mounts.  The winds at times play havoc and it is not unexpected to have a target stand blown over.  To remedy this issue the group fashioned concrete bases which will provide a much more secure footing.

The volunteers were Ralph Churchman, Ken Dearden, Tom Jacobs, Steve Jacketti, Martin Martin, Glen Mayernick, Tim Murphy, Linda Reynolds, Bud Robison, and Wynn Simon.

These concrete target stand bases will securely hold up to the typical afternoon winds that sometimes get brisk.

The work was completed in one day and we all appreciate the efforts.

Besides the occasional call for volunteers for work projects we also need more Range Safety Officers!  If you might be interested come out to the Range and ask the on duty RSO to outline what it all involves.  It is incumbent on all WSC members to assist in the operation of the club in some form or fashion.  This is YOUR club so please help if you can!

Tactical / Practical Tips

It’s winter!  Hard to tell with very little snow so far.  Thus the days are colder and getting very dark very early.  That naturally means you need a jacket for warmth but tactically you also need a flashlight to see.  And to be prepared invest in a pistol mounted flashlight.  What you can’t see very well might hurt you!

Snap “Shot”

The Grump – “Here’s my opinion – ought to be yours!”

I had a blind date last night.  I had worried what to do if she was really unattractive.  A friend said not to worry as there now is an app for that situation called “Mom, are you OK?”  It schedules your phone to ring just after you meet your date.  If you like her you just ignore the phone but if you want to cut the date short you answer with “Mom, what’s the matter?”  Works every time so no worries.  So anyways I knocked on the lady’s door and it turns out I needn’t have worried at all.  She was absolutely gorgeous and stunning.  But just as I was about to speak to her, her phone rang.  She answered it and said “Mom, you OK?”
